EAA Chapter 87 Minutes of Meeting Dated July 11, 2011

Submitted by Richard DeVito – Secretary

The July meeting was held at Brunswick Executive Airport. Vice President Charlie Roscoe called the meeting to order at 1934.

The June meeting minutes were accepted as posted on the Chapter web site.

Tom Muller reported that the balance at the end of May should be revised to reflect 5,057.97 rather than the reported $5,707.97. Tom advised that the balance effective 6/30/11 stands at $5,098.88, with a total of 43 members. There are two past members that have not renewed for 2011, and they will be dropped from the chapter rolls. DJ Merrill made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report and this was seconded by Tom Fisher. The motion passed unanimously.

Russell Keith confirmed that we will conduct a Young Eagles event at Brunswick Executive Airport on Saturday July 16. Cameras, a computer, and a printer will be available to give each participant a commemorative photo. Russell reported that six aircraft will be available for the event, with the additional possibility of a seventh aircraft. It also appears that sufficient ground staff will be available for the event. Leo Leclair will serve as air boss for the event. Pilot briefing will be at 0900, with registrations starting at 0930 and flights at 1000 hours.

The members also discussed using Augusta for a future event, but concerns over parking and TSA controls were cited. Rather than discounting Augusta totally, it was suggested that we directly discuss with TSA, and the current airport manager, the intent to hold a Young Eagles event at some future date, and get their direct input. Russell Keith agreed to follow up on this item.

In view of the Augusta situation, Russell Keith advised that we will hold the Young Eagles event planned for August 21, at Lewiston Auburn airport. More details will be forthcoming.

August 6 and 7 - Central Maine Airport at Norridgewock Fly-In.

August 13 and 14 – Wiscasset Airport – Texas Flying Legends WWII War birds

August 20 – Mark Hayden’s annual picnic. This is a fly-in/drive-in event, and will start around 1000 hours at Mark’s Emmett field, 86 Old Lewiston Rd, in Monmouth.

August 20 – Open house at Biddeford airport.

August 26 27, 28 – State of Maine Air Show – Brunswick Executive Airport

DJ Merrill reported that his Sportsman is on its gear

6. General

DJ Merrill passed around a magneto timer that he assembled for a cost of about $25.

DJ also related the problem he recently had with a rough running engine. It turned out the left mag recently shorted out due to pieces of an alignment pin inside the mag. The engine ran without problems for about 30 hours despite the pin being left on the engine.

The meeting was adjourned at 2040.

The August meeting will be held on Tuesday August 9 at Tom Muller’s hangar at Lewiston Auburn Airport. We will also have a chapter cook out in conjunction with the meeting with a planned start time of 1800 hours.

Directions to Tom’s hangar

If you are traveling from Bowdoinham or the coastal areas, take 196 into Lewiston and take the Maine Turnpike (toll free) south to Auburn. Exiting the turnpike, turn right and head SW on 202/26/100/4 (all the same road). Take a right at the first light just after the Irving truck stop onto Kittyhawk Drive. Travel to the four corner stop sign intersection and turn right onto Hotel Road. On Hotel road, take the first left onto White Hangar Drive. Mountain Machine Company is at the entrance to the airport. You can park outside the gate and walk in. The walk in gate is not locked. This area is dimly lit. Walk to the left of the white hangar and you will see yellow t-hangars on the front side of the white hangar. Tom’s hangar is in the second row of yellow T-hangars.
