EAA Chapter 87 Minutes of Meeting Dated March 12, 2013

The March meeting was held at Brunswick Executive Airport. President Charlie Gabelmann called the meeting to order at 1930.


Since the February meeting was held in conjunction with the Aviation Forum, the reading of the February meeting minutes was waived.


Tom Muller reported that the bank balance on 2/28/13 was $7,954.72. He also stated that the chapter currently has 32 paid members with a overall total of 40 members. The report was accepted as submitted


There was considerable discussion in reference to hosting a Fly In this summer, and a general agreement was reached on the following outline:

EAA 87 with the approval of MRRA will organize a Fly In at Brunswick Executive airport on June 22, 2013. There will not be any rain date.

We will definitely conduct Young Eagle flights. We may possibly serve a pancake breakfast, and vendors might be allowed for food only.

All attending members will need to participate in the set up and tear down. Everett Perkins agreed to serve as a point man for aircraft parking with back up from Charlie Gabelmann, Tom Muller, and Dj Merrill.

Tom Muller agreed to contact EAA National on insurance requirements, and Dj Merrill will send out a request for volunteers.

Dave Peppel commented that he could put together an FAA seminar for the Fly In.


All Maine EAA Chapters are supporting ACE Camp, and cost for 2013 will be $700.

EAA has cut off insurance for float plane activity during ACE Camp, and have disbanded a float plane chapter. Float plane chapters will continue to participate, and will purchase their own insurance.


Good information was distributed at the February Aviation Forum. There is a program underway to introduce auto fuel without ethanol additives. Irving Oil has agreed in principle to provide the fuel if sufficient volume exists. A “Sport fuel” program might be possible to accommodate 2 cycle and 4 cycle engines for boats and recreational vehicles.


Mark Hayden has completed the vertical stabilizer for his Vans aircraft and is ready for assembly.

Ron Card is continuing work on his Zenith 750, and Tom Muller has purchased a Zenith 750 kit.

Russell Keith is considering installation of a smoke system in his Vans RV 9A. He passed around a nozzle he has constructed and is investigating where in the exhaust system it should be installed. He has made adjustments to the engine exhaust ports and has gained RPM, but with increased fuel flow.

Dj Merrill reported that he finished his conversion from a carburator to a Rotec throttle body injector on his Glastar. 5.3 hours flown with no squawks.

Jerry Crute has published three photo collection books featuring, Georgetown, Seguin, and Boothbay Harbor.

The April meeting will be held at Brunswick Executive Airport on April 9, 2013 at 1930 hours.
