EAA Chapter 87 Minutes of Meeting Dated May 12, 2015 Submitted by Richard DeVito – Secretary

The May meeting was held at Brunswick Executive Airport. President Charlie Gabelmann called the meeting to order at 1930.


The April report was approved as posted on the chapter web site.


Tom Muller reported that the bank balance on 04/30/15 was $5029.03 with nine paid memberships and three additional with waived payments. Thirty membership invoices are outstanding at the present time. The report was approved as submitted.

3. Youth Memberships

Charlie Gabelmann introduced three young men that have joined EAA and the chapter as Youth Members. They are Dean, Nathan, and Mathew, and all are in ultra light flight training classes with Charlie.


Charlie Gabelmann reported that the fly in is scheduled at Brunswick for June 20. The chapter will be responsible for a Young Eagles program, and the safety seminar. Russell Keith is looking for pilots and ground staff for the Young Eagles program and will send out a request in that regard. Charlie agreed to check on a golf cart for the fly in.

ACE CAMP - Richard DeVito reported he had two possible candidates for the chapter to sponsor at Ace Camp, but he would not know for sure until next week. In the event we do not have any candidates to sponsor, the chapter will send the money to Ace Camp organizers for their use. The chapter agreed to provide $665 for one participate at Bangor and one at Portland for $265. That is the camp cost less $100 in each case.


There are three bicycles slated to be placed at Brunswick for use by visiting pilots. Chapter members discussed providing a storage cabinet and lock for the bicycles, and a motion was made, seconded, and approved to spend up to $150 for the program.

Tom Muller reported that Paul Caparrotto’s plane needed some work on the tires and suggested the chapter members help work on the plane. Tom cited Paul’s work in obtaining annual donation to the chapter by State Farm Insurance. While members agreed in principle with the proposal, there was concern that Paul might not want the assistance. Tom agreed to contact Paul to ascertain his position on the matter.

The Hampton flea market will be held at the Plum Island airport this year due to work on the Hampton runway.

On July 14, the chapter will meet by Tom Muller’s hangar for a cook out. Directions will be provided in the June meeting minutes.

The Bowman field fly in will be held on August 22.

Mark Hayden’s annual fly in and picnic will be held on August 15 with a rain date of August 16.

There was some discussion on possible fund raising events, but nothing firm was decided. Events included a raffle, a bake sale, and an aviation flea market.


Dj Merrill reported he has flown with an electronic ignition system in his Glastar for 1.5 hours with no problems. The left ignition is a standard magneto system while the right ignition is electronic. The engine is flying with automotive plugs.

Dj also reported that he updated the server to new software and newer hardware that runs the chapter web site and the mailing list. The server was donated by Bowdoin College, and the software is free Open Source.

Everett Perkins reported he is getting a crankshaft turned for a five cylinder radial.

The meeting was adjourned at 2100.


The June meeting will be held on Tuesday June 9 at Brunswick Executive Airport (KBMEX) commencing at 1930 hours. We will meet in the conference room in the FBO building (Old tower)
